4000 plus Mackay residents hear Ibalance talks

Speaker and visitor Brad Huddleston has travelled from the United States to help Mackay district police address digital addiction – addressing students at Mackay North State Primary School

My word – we are lucky!

Brad Huddleston has been travelling from the US to Mackay for more than 10 years – working in our district individually and with police to tackle a global problem.  Digital Addiction.  Brad has partnered with the University of South Africa to perform research into this issue – this research has lead him to give presentations globally on the topic for a long time.

When I say globally, I mean – through out the United States (talking to tech gurus in the Silicon Valley for example), Cambodia, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and also Switzerland.  He has authored a book on the subject – The Dark Side of Technology and as we speak a documentary is being filmed focussing on his work and the issue of digital addiction itself.

Like I said.  We are lucky.

Brad is travelling with Sergeant Nigel Dalton from Mackay’s Crime Prevention Unit across our district- they are talking to more than 4000 thousand of our residents, including students, community groups/organisations, businesses and concerned parents.  As Brad addresses the impacts of digital addiction, Sergeant Dalton covers off on legislation such as inappropriate use of communication devices, sexting, cyber safety and reporting methods for those impacted.  This is all work which falls easily into Queensland’s Child Protection Week concerns.

Each year that Brad returns to the Mackay district we receive more requests from right across the district from residents wishing to hear what he has to say.

Feedback from evaluation sheets passed on to our adult attendee’s have been overwhelmingly positive to date – comments such as “outstanding”, “life-changing” and “eye opening” show that we are hitting the mark.  The most frequent comment from attendee’s though is this :

“More people need to hear this talk!”
