These pictures of some geese taken on the pedestrian foot-bridge of the goose-ponds in Malcomson Street, North Mackay look like they belong on the front cover of an Eminem album.
The pedestrian bridge here is well known as a location that geese use to cross from one side of the road to the other. (No jokes about why the goose crossed the road please.)
Signage has even existed in the past to warn motorists that geese cross at that location. Although 99 per cent of the time motorists respect this and stop to allow the crossing to occur, it can sometimes cause problems.
At 3:20 pm on September 13, a three car traffic crash occurred at this location as motorists attempted to give way to geese crossing the road. It’s very unfortunate that two people received injuries in this crash.
We are doing two things here. Firstly, we are reminding everyone to be aware when they travel through this location that some motorists may brake suddenly to avoid a collision with the local wildlife.
Secondly, we are also reminding you that in all circumstances the distance between your bonnet and the boot of the car in front of you (following distance) should be sufficient to avoid a tail-ender crash in any circumstances – even in an emergency. Don’t follow the car in front of you too closely.
It’s unbelievable how well the geese themselves have adapted to this crossing location – if you watch them closely, they actually seem to observe traffic closely, waiting for cars to stop before they set foot onto the road.
They know… they have one shot, one opportunity.
To seize everything they’ve ever wanted. In one moment. Will they capture it, or just let it slip?
