Stop stopping the stop signs from making cars stop!
Regardless of anyone’s motives – if you deface, damage or otherwise interfere with an official traffic sign you commit an offence.
We are aware that multiple stop signs in the Mackay police division have been interfered with in recent days. Any one who is identified as having committed this offence will appear in court and could face strong penalties – fines of up to 40 penalty units (equals just over $5000) and up to 6 months imprisonment.
Official traffic signs exist for the safety of motorists – they are not a community notice board.
Anyone who has information which may assist investigators in identifying those responsible for defacing an official traffic sign are encouraged to contact the Mackay Police Station on 0749 683 444 or you can contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 any time.
